DAWN WATCH 086: MAKE ROOM TO HEAR
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2026 • PILGRIMAGE DAY 086
SCRIPTURE
“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:”
James 1:19 (KJV, excerpt)
DEVOTIONAL
Before the first conversation, decide whether you are willing to be surprised.
We often enter a room carrying an explanation of everyone in it. We know what they will say, why they will say it, and how we intend to answer. Listening becomes a pause before our own prepared speech.
James calls us to a different pace. Being swift to hear means making room for what another person actually brings. It does not require agreement with every claim. It requires attention before judgment and patience before reply.
Choose one conversation today in which you will ask an honest question and allow the answer to finish. You may discover a fact you missed, a burden you misunderstood, or a correction you need. Humility gives hearing somewhere to land.
INSIGHT
A teachable heart listens for what is present instead of defending what it already assumes.
REFLECTION
Whom have you already decided you understand?
What honest question could open today’s conversation?
PRAYER
Father, make me quick to hear and willing to learn. Quiet the answer I am rehearsing long enough for me to attend to the person before me. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Enter the conversation with room to learn.
Attention can be an act of love.
