MIDDAY BEARINGS 026: NOT EVERY BELL IS YOURS
THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 2026 · PILGRIMAGE DAY 026
SCRIPTURE
“But Martha was distracted with much serving… But one thing is needed.”
Luke 10:40, 42
DEVOTIONAL
Some days do not become difficult because anything terrible happens.
They become crowded.
A notification.
A request.
Another request.
Someone needs an answer.
Something needs fixing.
A task that should have taken twenty minutes becomes an hour.
The phone rings.
The inbox grows.
You remember something you forgot.
Nothing is necessarily wrong.
But attention begins to fracture.
Luke tells us Martha was distracted with much serving.
That phrase deserves tenderness.
She was serving.
Hospitality mattered. Work needed doing. Jesus and His companions were in her home.
The problem was not that she cared about practical things.
The problem was that the practical things had multiplied inside her until she could no longer be present.
We know the feeling.
Too many bells ringing.
Too many small claims upon attention.
Eventually we stop asking which bell belongs to us.
We simply respond.
Midday may find you there.
Not sinful.
Not rebellious.
Just scattered.
One of the hardest disciplines in a crowded life is accepting that something may remain unanswered for a while.
Not every message requires immediate response.
Not every problem requires your involvement.
Not every task deserves equal urgency.
Not everything worth doing must be done now.
This can feel uncomfortable because responsiveness is often praised.
And sometimes quick response is love.
But constant reaction can become another way of avoiding discernment.
The question is not merely, What needs doing?
It is, What is mine to do now?
Jesus tells Martha that one thing is needed.
His words are not contempt for work.
They restore order.
Presence first.
From there, action can become action again instead of agitation.
You may not be able to leave work and sit silently for an hour.
That is not necessary.
You can pause long enough to stop treating every incoming demand as sovereign.
Take one breath before responding.
Look at the list.
Choose the next faithful thing.
Let something wait.
If you disappoint someone by not answering immediately, you may discover that the world continues.
This is not indifference.
It is creatureliness.
Only God can be present to every need at once.
You cannot.
There is relief in finally agreeing with that.
Perhaps the correction for this afternoon is not doing more efficiently.
Perhaps it is recovering the ability to choose.
One thing.
Then another.
Without letting the whole field shout at you at once.
INSIGHT
Distraction is not always caused by meaningless things.
Sometimes good responsibilities become spiritually disorienting when they lose their proper order.
Discernment restores proportion.
REFLECTION
What is ringing loudest for your attention right now?
Does it truly require an immediate response, or has urgency simply become habitual?
What is the one faithful thing that actually belongs to the next portion of your day?
PRAYER
Father, gather my scattered attention. Give me wisdom to distinguish what is important from what is merely loud. Teach me to serve without becoming ruled by every demand, and give me peace to let some things wait. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Not every bell is yours to answer.
Choose the work that belongs to you.
Give it your presence.
Let the rest remain in God’s hands until its time comes.
