MIDDAY BEARINGS - 021: KNOW WHEN ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Faithfulness is not measured by how long you can refuse to stop.

Pilgrimage, Day 21 • Saturday, August 15, 2026

“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.”
Hebrews 4:9

PAUSE

Midday can tempt you into negotiation.

Just one more thing.

Then one more.

Then another.

The boundary you imagined this morning begins moving farther away.

Sometimes that is appropriate.

Work occasionally requires more than expected.

But sometimes the moving boundary reveals something else.

We are afraid to stop because stopping means admitting the work will remain unfinished.

And unfinished work reminds us that we are limited.

SCRIPTURE

Rest runs through Scripture as more than recovery.

Sabbath is testimony.

God sustains creation.

God provides.

God remains at work when human hands stop.

Rest therefore becomes an embodied confession:

I am not the source of everything.

The work depends upon me in some ways.

It does not depend upon me ultimately.

MIDDAY BEARING

Before entering the next block, ask:

Before I step into this next block, whose am I, and how can I express that identity faithfully in what I'm about to do?

Perhaps faithfulness means another focused hour.

Perhaps it means stopping at the boundary already chosen.

Do not assume that continuing is always more virtuous than stopping.

Ask what love, wisdom, and stewardship require.

Then obey that.

REFLECTION

What would make you feel permitted to stop today?

Everything finished?

Everyone satisfied?

No unanswered message?

No unfinished thought?

If that is the standard, rest will never arrive.

There will always be more work.

A finite creature needs another measure.

Faithfulness.

Have I tended what was reasonably mine to tend?

If so, enough may already be enough.

SCRIPTURE FOR THE AFTERNOON

“Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while.”
Mark 6:31

MIDDAY PRAYER

Father,

Teach me to recognize enough.

Keep me from laziness, but also from the pride that refuses limitation.

Give me wisdom to know what genuinely needs to be finished and what can remain unfinished.

When the proper boundary arrives, give me the trust to honor it.

Remind me that You remain at work after my hands become still.

Amen.

THRESHOLD

Before the next work block, decide what will mark its completion.

Write the stopping point down.

When you reach it, evaluate honestly.

If something truly requires continuing, continue deliberately.

If not, stop deliberately.

Say:

I am allowed to be finite. God remains faithful.

BENEDICTION

May you work without being consumed by work.

May you stop without guilt when faithfulness has been given.

May rest become trust made visible.

Enough is not failure. Sometimes enough is obedience.
