DAWN WATCH 022: BEFORE THE DAY SPEAKS

SCRIPTURE

“Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.”

Psalm 143:8

DEVOTIONAL

There is a small mercy hidden in morning.

The day has not yet said what it will be.

Whatever waited for you when you woke may already be real. There may be work unfinished from yesterday, a difficult conversation ahead, a bill on the counter, grief that did not disappear while you slept, or a decision whose answer still has not come.

But this particular day has not yet unfolded.

David asks God to enter that space first.

“Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning.”

Notice what he asks to hear before he asks where to go.

God’s loving kindness.

Then direction.

We often reverse the order.

We wake asking, What do I need to do? What problem needs solving? Where am I supposed to go? How am I going to manage all of this?

David begins beneath all of that.

Before the road, the relationship.

Before instruction, remembrance.

Before movement, trust.

This matters because whatever speaks first tends to establish the terms of the day.

If anxiety gets the first word, everything may begin looking like a threat.

If ambition speaks first, people may become obstacles or opportunities.

If shame speaks first, every mistake may feel like evidence.

If urgency speaks first, even good things may begin to feel like interruptions.

David wants another voice established before those voices gather.

He wants to remember the character of God.

The Hebrew Scriptures return again and again to God’s steadfast love because Israel’s hope did not rest in favorable circumstances. Their confidence rested in the God who remained faithful when circumstances changed.

Morning prayer can become our way of returning to that same ground.

Not because fifteen quiet minutes guarantee a peaceful day.

They do not.

Not because Scripture is a technique for getting ourselves into the right mindset.

It is not.

We come because God is God before anything else happens today.

We come because our identity does not need to be renegotiated every morning according to yesterday’s success or failure.

We come because the road makes more sense when we remember whose road we are walking.

David eventually asks, “Cause me to know the way in which I should walk.”

That is a good prayer.

Some mornings we truly do need direction.

But perhaps the first answer God gives is not a map.

Perhaps it is Himself.

His mercy has not expired overnight.

His faithfulness did not weaken while you slept.

His patience did not depend upon yesterday going perfectly.

The One you trusted yesterday remains worthy of trust this morning.

You may still need to make hard decisions.

You may still misunderstand something.

Plans may change before noon.

But you do not have to begin the day by securing yourself.

Begin by receiving what is already true.

You are standing in the presence of a faithful God.

Let that truth speak before everything else does.

Then ask Him where to walk.

INSIGHT

Spiritual direction begins with spiritual orientation.

David does not first ask God to reveal the road. He first asks to hear again of God’s steadfast love.

Knowing where we are going matters.

Knowing whose love holds us while we go matters even more.

REFLECTION

What usually speaks first in you when morning comes?

Is there a responsibility, fear, desire, regret, or expectation that tends to establish the emotional terms of your day before you have remembered God?

What would it mean this morning to let God’s character become more authoritative than your circumstances?

Sit with this before moving on:

God has not changed overnight.

PRAYER

Father, let Your faithfulness speak louder than everything competing for my attention this morning. Remind me of Your steadfast love before I begin measuring the day by what happens in it. Show me the road that belongs to me, and teach me to walk it trusting You. Amen.
