EVENING EMBERS 014 - REST BESIDE THE STONE
Remembered mercy is a good place to sleep.

“To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night.”
Psalm 92:2
THE WITNESS AT DUSK
This morning, you looked behind and marked the help that brought you here.
At midday, you counted more than miles.
Now evening settles over the stone.
The week may not have ended where you hoped. Some prayers remain unanswered. Some work remains open. The next stretch of road may already be pressing against your thoughts.
But the stone does not claim that the journey is finished.
It bears witness that you were helped.
God provided something when you needed it.
He restrained something that might have consumed you.
He corrected, strengthened, carried, or kept you.
Perhaps the mercy was unmistakable.
Perhaps you nearly overlooked it because it arrived as enough rather than abundance.
Either way, you are not standing where you began.
LET REMEMBRANCE KEEP WATCH
Return once more to the sentence:
Hitherto hath the Lord helped me.
Do not add a promise that next week will be easy.
Do not demand an explanation for what remains unresolved.
Let the truth stand without decoration.
You have been helped this far.
The stone can remain awake while you sleep. Its witness does not depend upon your continual attention. When fear wakes before you tomorrow, the help behind you will still be true.
Thank God for one mercy from the week.
Name one burden you will not carry into the next.
Then lie down beside remembered faithfulness.
Morning will bring another portion of road.
Tonight, the stone is enough.
PRAYER
Father, thank You for every mercy that carried me to this evening.
Keep me from forgetting Your help when the next difficult mile appears. I release what remains unfinished and refuse to let tomorrow erase the evidence behind me.
Let remembrance become rest.
Hitherto, You have helped me.
Amen.
REST
May the stone behind you remain a faithful witness.
May gratitude quiet the road ahead.
And may you sleep on ground already marked by the help of God.
