MIDDAY BEARINGS - 016: RETURN TO THE VINE

When effort begins to outrun communion, return to the source of life.

Pilgrimage, Day 16 • Monday, August 10, 2026

“As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.”
John 15:4

PAUSE

By midday, Monday can begin to feel like momentum.

Messages answered.

Problems multiplying.

Plans taking shape.

Attention scattered across several directions.

It is possible to spend the entire morning doing good work and still become disconnected inside.

The hands keep moving.

The soul begins running on fumes.

This is your invitation to return.

SCRIPTURE

The branch does not become less dependent upon the vine after several productive hours.

If anything, fruitfulness reveals dependence.

Every leaf.

Every bud.

Every piece of fruit.

All of it is evidence that life came from somewhere deeper.

Jesus does not offer abiding as a morning ritual that prepares us to work independently afterward.

Abiding is continuous.

Remain.

Then remain again.

MIDDAY BEARING

Ask:

Before I step into this next block, whose am I, and how can I express that identity faithfully in what I'm about to do?

If you belong to Christ, then communion is not something you left behind at breakfast.

Return to Him now.

Not dramatically.

Simply become aware again.

You are branch.

He is vine.

You are receiving before producing.

Even here.

Especially here.

REFLECTION

Has the work begun to feel heavier than it did this morning?

Are you trying to force progress?

Have you become irritated because things are moving more slowly than expected?

These may be signs that effort has quietly slipped into self-reliance.

The answer is not necessarily to stop working.

It may simply be to stop working alone.

SCRIPTURE FOR THE AFTERNOON

“In him we live, and move, and have our being.”
Acts 17:28

MIDDAY PRAYER

Jesus,

I return to You.

Forgive me for drifting into the illusion that I can sustain myself.

Reconnect my attention to Your presence.

Let the next block grow from communion rather than strain.

Where I am forcing, teach me to receive.

Where I am anxious, teach me to remain.

Where I am tired, remind me that the life of the branch was never self-generated.

Amen.

THRESHOLD

Before touching the next task, place your hands open on the desk or in your lap.

Say:

I receive before I produce. I abide before I build.

Remain quiet for one minute.

Then continue.

BENEDICTION

May the afternoon not be powered by whatever strength remains.

May it be rooted again in the One who gives life.

Return to the vine. Then keep going.
