MIDDAY BEARINGS 023: LEAVE TOMORROW ALONE
MONDAY, AUGUST 17, 2026 · PILGRIMAGE DAY 023
SCRIPTURE
“Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.”
Matthew 6:34
DEVOTIONAL
Tomorrow has a way of entering the room without being invited.
You may have started today determined to remain with what was actually in front of you.
Then the mind wandered ahead.
What if this does not work?
What happens next month?
What if that conversation goes badly?
What will I do if the money is not there?
What if the answer is no?
There is nothing unusual about thinking ahead.
Planning is part of wisdom.
Jesus is not commanding His disciples to become careless or indifferent to consequences.
He is speaking about anxiety.
Anxiety does something different from preparation.
Preparation asks, What can responsibly be done?
Anxiety asks the same question after everything responsible has already been done.
Then asks it again.
And again.
It keeps traveling into a future where the body cannot follow.
That may be where you find yourself now.
Physically, you are sitting in Monday.
Mentally, you may be living three weeks from now.
Jesus calls you back.
“Each day’s own evil is sufficient.”
There is almost dry mercy in that sentence.
Today has enough in it already.
You do not need to import imaginary burdens from another date.
The manna principle reaches midday too.
You were not given grace this morning so that you could mentally live the next six months before supper.
Grace meets you where you actually are.
Sometimes the most faithful midday correction is not doing something.
It is stopping.
Stop rehearsing the outcome.
Stop trying to solve what cannot yet be solved.
Stop answering questions no one has asked you.
Stop having conversations in your head with people who are not present.
This does not mean the future is unimportant.
It means the future belongs to God before it belongs to you.
There may indeed be something you need to do about tomorrow.
Write the email.
Make the appointment.
Set aside the money.
Have the necessary conversation.
Put it on the calendar.
Then return.
The body is useful here.
Notice where your feet are.
The chair beneath you.
The room around you.
The meal in front of you.
The work that can actually be touched.
Anxiety often becomes abstract.
Faithfulness tends to be concrete.
This page.
This person.
This task.
This prayer.
This hour.
Jesus does not say tomorrow will contain no trouble.
He says tomorrow does not need to be carried today.
There is a difference.
Maybe you will need courage later.
Maybe you will need wisdom.
Maybe you will need endurance you cannot presently imagine possessing.
If that hour comes, grace can meet you there.
For now, leave tomorrow where it is.
Come back to Monday.
There is still enough life here to live.
INSIGHT
Anxiety tries to make us responsible for times and outcomes we cannot presently inhabit.
Faith does not ignore the future. It refuses to live there prematurely.
God gives grace in the place where obedience is actually possible: now.
REFLECTION
Where has your mind been living today?
Is there a future problem you have continued working on internally after you have already done what can reasonably be done?
What belongs to this afternoon, and what can be returned to God until its hour comes?
PRAYER
Father, bring me back to the day You have actually given me. Give me wisdom to prepare where preparation is needed and trust to stop where my responsibility ends. Keep me from spending today’s strength on tomorrow’s imagined burdens. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Tomorrow does not need you yet.
Return to the ground beneath your feet.
There is grace enough for this hour.
Let the next one come when it comes.
