MIDDAY BEARINGS 024: WHAT IS FEEDING YOU?

TUESDAY, AUGUST 18, 2026 · PILGRIMAGE DAY 024

SCRIPTURE

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:21

DEVOTIONAL

Attention leaves evidence.

By midday, you can usually see where some of yours has gone.

What have you checked repeatedly?

What thought keeps returning?

Whose approval has mattered more than you expected?

What outcome have you been quietly monitoring?

What has made your mood rise or fall?

Jesus says the heart follows treasure.

We often imagine treasure as something obvious: money, possessions, status.

But treasure can be subtler.

Being admired.

Being right.

Being wanted.

Being productive.

Being safe.

Winning an argument no one else knows you are having.

Proving someone wrong.

Receiving the message you hope will arrive.

Anything can become heavy enough in the heart that the rest of life begins orbiting it.

That is worth noticing because the morning began with the image of the vine.

Remain in Christ.

Receive life from the source.

But several hours later, it is possible to discover that we have begun feeding elsewhere.

This happens quietly.

A compliment gives us life.

A criticism takes it away.

A number on a screen becomes a verdict.

Someone’s attention becomes evidence that we matter.

Silence becomes evidence that we do not.

The heart is remarkably willing to turn created things into sources.

The problem is not that these things are meaningless.

A good reputation matters.

Work matters.

Money matters.

Relationships matter.

Being understood matters.

The problem begins when we ask one of them to supply what it was never made to carry.

Then dependence forms.

We begin needing the next reassurance.

The next success.

The next response.

The next sign that everything is going our way.

This is one way we can become spiritually depleted while remaining very busy.

We keep drawing from wells that cannot stay full.

Midday is a good time to notice what you have been drinking from.

Again, the goal is not suspicion.

You do not need to analyze every pleasant feeling.

If someone encouraged you today, receive it.

If work is going well, enjoy it.

If something good happened, give thanks.

God is not threatened by your enjoyment of His gifts.

But gifts make poor gods.

If your peace has become dependent on something happening a certain way this afternoon, that may be worth opening your hands around.

Return to the vine.

Not dramatically.

You do not need a spiritual emergency.

Just recognize what happened.

Your attention wandered toward another source.

Bring it back.

Christ has not moved.

The connection is still offered.

Sometimes remaining is simply noticing that you have been looking elsewhere and turning your face home.

INSIGHT

Whatever we rely upon for identity, security, or life will exert enormous influence over our hearts.

Created things can be enjoyed without becoming sources.

Christ alone can bear the weight of being the center from which we live.

REFLECTION

What has your attention been returning to today?

Has your peace begun depending upon a particular response, outcome, person, number, or sign?

Can you receive the good things in your life as gifts without requiring them to tell you who you are?

PRAYER

Jesus, show me where I have begun drawing life from things that cannot sustain me. Teach me to enjoy Your gifts without turning them into my source. Gather my attention back to You and let the rest of this day grow from communion rather than dependence on outcomes. Amen.

BENEDICTION

Notice what has been feeding you.

Release what cannot carry your life.

Return to Christ.

The vine has not withdrawn from the branch.
