MIDDAY BEARINGS 025: THE TURN IS STILL AVAILABLE

SCRIPTURE
“Return to me, and I will return to you, says Yahweh of Armies.”
Malachi 3:7
DEVOTIONAL
Perhaps you already know where the day went wrong.
You said the thing.
You sent the message too quickly.
You fed the resentment.
You recognized the temptation and followed it anyway.
You ignored the quiet conviction that told you not to keep going.
Or maybe nothing dramatic happened.
You simply became someone you do not want to be for an hour.
Sharp.
Cold.
Self-protective.
Impatient.
Proud.
Midday can expose these things because there is still enough day behind us to see a pattern, and enough day ahead of us to do something about it.
One temptation at this point is to declare the whole day ruined.
We are strangely attracted to this.
If the morning was not faithful, then perhaps the afternoon no longer matters.
If we already failed once, we may as well continue in the same direction.
Shame likes momentum.
God interrupts it with a simpler invitation.
Return.
The prophets repeatedly call Israel back to God, often after far greater failures than a bad morning.
Return.
Not explain.
Not pretend.
Not minimize.
Not punish yourself into worthiness.
Return.
Repentance is immediate in a way shame is not.
Shame wants you to remain staring at yourself.
Repentance turns your face toward God.
That turn may include consequences.
An apology may be required.
Something may need to be confessed.
A practical boundary may need to change.
You may have to repair what your behavior damaged.
Grace does not make truth unnecessary.
It makes truth survivable.
That matters.
If mercy were only available after we became worthy of it, none of us could turn.
The gospel gives us another ground.
Christ has already opened the way home.
So correction can happen without terror.
The question is no longer, Can I make myself acceptable again?
The question becomes, Will I return?
Maybe your day does not need a grand spiritual reset.
Maybe you need to text someone and say, “I was wrong.”
Maybe you need to stop rereading the thing that is keeping you angry.
Maybe you need to close a tab.
Put down the phone.
Tell the truth.
Take the walk.
Begin the task you have been avoiding.
Forgive the interruption.
The road back is often embarrassingly ordinary.
That is good news.
You do not need to wait until tomorrow morning to become faithful again.
The turn is available now.
INSIGHT
Repentance restores movement.
Shame freezes us inside failure, while grace makes truthful return possible.
A wrong turn does not require the remainder of the day to be spent traveling in the wrong direction.
REFLECTION
Is there anything you already know you need to turn from today?
Are you spending more energy condemning yourself than actually returning to God?
What concrete act would repentance take in the next hour?
PRAYER
Father, thank You that the road back remains open. Give me courage to tell the truth about where I have wandered and humility to make whatever repair is mine to make. Keep shame from becoming another excuse to remain where I do not belong. Lead me back into faithfulness now. Amen.

You do not need to wait for a new morning.
Turn now.
Grace is not behind you.
The road home is still beneath your feet.
