“Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.”

1 Samuel 7:12

A STONE IN THE ROAD

After the Lord delivered Israel, Samuel placed a stone between Mizpeh and Shen. He named it Ebenezer—the stone of help.

He did not name it for his endurance.

He did not call it the monument of excellent planning.

He marked the ground so the people would remember who had carried them to it.

A stone does not explain itself. It sits where it was placed. The next generation must ask why it is there, and someone must remember the story.

We move too quickly past answered prayer. Relief comes, the pressure lifts, and our attention rushes toward the next concern. Yesterday’s deliverance becomes today’s forgotten ground.

Then another hard mile arrives, and we behave as though God has never helped us before.

MARK THIS GROUND

Before this week closes, look behind you.

Where did strength arrive after yours had failed?

What danger passed without consuming you?

Which need was answered quietly?

Where did God keep you even though He did not change the circumstances as quickly as you wanted?

Write one sentence:

Hitherto hath the Lord helped me by—

Finish it plainly.

You may choose a small object, a written note, or a line in your journal to mark what happened. The object holds no power. It merely refuses to let forgetfulness have the final word.

You are not pretending the road ahead will be easy. You are remembering that the road behind you was not traveled alone.

Place the stone.

Tell the truth about the help.

Then continue.

PRAYER

Father, slow me long enough to remember.

Bring to mind the mercies I hurried past and the help I received without fully recognizing it. Keep me from taking credit for what Your hand sustained.

Let remembrance become courage for the next mile.

Hitherto, You have helped me.

Amen.

BENEDICTION

May the stones behind you bear witness when the road ahead grows dark.

May remembered mercy strengthen present faith.

And may every mile declare that the Lord has helped you thus far.
