EVENING EMBERS 013 - LEAVE IT ON THE PORCH
Not every burden that traveled with you belongs inside the house.
Friday, August 7, 2026 · The Pilgrimage, Day 13
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28
WHAT FOLLOWED YOU HOME
The body may leave the day before the mind does.
You cross the threshold, sit down, and discover that work has entered behind you. A difficult conversation takes a chair. Tomorrow’s uncertainty stands near the window. Someone else’s judgment paces the room as though it pays rent.
The day has ended, but its burdens have made themselves at home.
Some arrived through genuine responsibility.
Others attached themselves because you kept reaching back for them.
Christ does not wait beyond a harder mile and call rest a reward for those strong enough to reach Him.
He meets the burdened where they are.
His invitation is not to organize the weight more efficiently.
It is to come.
BEFORE YOU ENTER
Stand at the threshold in your mind.
Look at what has followed you.
The work may return tomorrow, but it does not need a bed tonight.
Another person’s choices may concern you, but they do not belong beneath your roof.
The explanation you keep composing for those determined to misunderstand you can remain outside altogether.
Set each burden on the porch before entering the quiet Christ has prepared.
You are not throwing away what matters. You are allowing God to distinguish between responsibility and possession.
There are things you must carry faithfully.
There are things you may carry compassionately for a little while.
There are things you were never meant to lift.
Tonight, let Christ sort them.
Come inside empty-handed.
PRAYER
Jesus, I have carried some things farther than You asked me to.
Meet me at the threshold. Show me what belongs to tomorrow, what belongs to another person, and what belongs entirely to You.
I accept Your invitation to come without defending my weariness. Let me enter this night without bringing the whole road into the house.
Amen.
REST
May every needless burden remain on the porch.
May the doorway close gently behind you.
And may the house of God’s presence receive you empty-handed.
