MIDDAY BEARINGS - 017: STAY WITH YOUR PORTION
The afternoon becomes lighter when you stop carrying work that does not belong to it.
Pilgrimage, Day 17 • Tuesday, August 11, 2026
“Every man shall bear his own burden.”
Galatians 6:5
PAUSE
By midday, the boundaries of a day often begin to blur.
One task suggests three others.
A conversation creates another responsibility.
Something you saw online reminds you of a project you should start.
Another person's urgency begins feeling like your emergency.
Soon the portion you began with has doubled.
Then tripled.
The body remains in Tuesday afternoon.
The mind begins carrying the whole world.
SCRIPTURE
Scripture teaches both burden-bearing and responsibility.
We are called to carry one another's burdens.
We are also told that each person must bear his own load.
Wisdom lives between those truths.
Love does not require carrying everything.
Faithfulness requires discerning what has actually been entrusted to you.
MIDDAY BEARING
Ask again:
Before I step into this next block, whose am I, and how can I express that identity faithfully in what I'm about to do?
Then add another question:
What actually belongs in this block?
Not what could be done.
Not everything that matters.
Not every open loop in your life.
What belongs here?
That is enough.
REFLECTION
What have you picked up since this morning that was not part of today's portion?
Is it genuinely yours?
Is it urgent?
Does it belong now?
Could it be scheduled?
Delegated?
Released?
Not every good thing belongs in this hour.
That does not make it unimportant.
It simply means faithfulness has boundaries.
SCRIPTURE FOR THE AFTERNOON
“Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.”
1 Corinthians 7:20
MIDDAY PRAYER
Father,
Clarify my portion.
Show me what belongs in my hands and what does not.
Keep me generous without making me indiscriminate.
Keep me available without becoming scattered.
Teach me to honor the limits of this day.
Give me courage to put down what is not mine and patience to tend what is.
Amen.
THRESHOLD
Before the next block, look at everything competing for your attention.
Choose the one responsibility that genuinely belongs there.
Move the rest out of sight if possible.
Then say:
This is enough for this block.
Begin.
BENEDICTION
May the afternoon become smaller and more faithful.
May you release the whole field and tend the ground beneath your feet.
Stay with your portion.
