DAWN WATCH 027: OPEN HANDS

SCRIPTURE
“Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5–6
DEVOTIONAL
Trust becomes most visible when understanding runs out.
It is easy to speak of trusting God when the road ahead agrees with us.
The plan makes sense.
The timing seems reasonable.
The outcome appears to confirm what we believed should happen.
Then something shifts.
A door closes.
A person changes their mind.
The answer takes longer than expected.
A prayer seems to move in the opposite direction from what we hoped.
Suddenly trust is no longer a religious idea.
It becomes a question of what we will do with uncertainty.
Proverbs does not tell us to reject understanding.
Wisdom literature values understanding deeply.
It teaches us to observe consequences, learn discipline, seek counsel, recognize folly, and grow in discernment.
The warning is against leaning upon our understanding as though it were capable of carrying the full weight of our lives.
Understanding is useful.
It is not God.
There will always be more happening than you can see.
You know your intentions imperfectly.
You know other people partially.
You know the future almost not at all.
Even when you have planned carefully, gathered information, prayed sincerely, and acted wisely, there remains a portion of life you cannot hold.
That portion can become terrifying if your peace depends upon comprehension.
Sometimes faith looks like open hands.
Not passive hands.
Not careless hands.
Open hands.
You make the call.
Submit the work.
Have the conversation.
Prepare the budget.
Apologize.
Show up.
Do what wisdom actually gives you to do.
Then you release the outcome you were never capable of controlling anyway.
This is difficult because control often disguises itself as responsibility.
We tell ourselves we are simply being diligent while our minds circle endlessly around possibilities that cannot be resolved.
We replay.
Predict.
Construct contingencies.
Try to think our way into certainty.
Eventually thought stops serving wisdom and begins serving fear.
Trust interrupts that cycle.
Not by pretending everything will happen the way we want.
Scripture never promises that.
Trust says something more durable:
Whatever happens, God will remain God.
The path may straighten differently than you expected.
A closed road may become part of the guidance.
A delay may reveal what speed concealed.
A disappointment may expose what you were actually depending upon.
Or perhaps nothing becomes understandable for quite some time.
Trust still has somewhere to stand.
God’s character.
That is what open hands finally mean.
We stop demanding that God explain Himself before we obey Him.
We use the understanding we have.
We refuse to worship it.
And we keep walking.
INSIGHT
Biblical trust is not the abandonment of wisdom. It is the refusal to make human understanding the foundation of security.
We think carefully.
We act responsibly.
Then we entrust what exceeds our sight to God.
REFLECTION
Where are you currently demanding understanding before you are willing to trust?
Has responsible planning crossed into anxious attempts to control an outcome?
What would it mean to act faithfully today and then leave the result in God’s hands?
PRAYER
Father, thank You for the understanding You have given me, and forgive me when I ask it to carry what only You can bear. Help me act wisely without becoming consumed by outcomes. Where I cannot see the whole road, teach me to trust Your character and keep walking faithfully. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Use the wisdom you have been given.
Then open your hands.
You do not need to understand everything in order to walk with God.
Trust Him with the part of the road you cannot see.
