MIDDAY BEARINGS 027: WHEN THE OUTCOME OWNS YOU

SCRIPTURE
“Cast your burden on Yahweh and he will sustain you.”
Psalm 55:22
DEVOTIONAL
You can tell when an outcome has begun owning you.
The mind keeps touching it.
Checking.
Recalculating.
Imagining.
Reading signs into ordinary things.
A delayed response becomes meaningful.
A changed tone becomes evidence.
A small setback becomes prophecy.
You may have done everything responsibly available to you.
Still, the mind keeps reaching for the result.
This is one of the places where surrender becomes concrete.
Not in theory.
In the body.
Your jaw.
Your shoulders.
Your hand checking the phone again.
Your thoughts repeating the same path.
Psalm 55 comes from distress.
David is not calmly explaining detachment from a peaceful place. He is betrayed, overwhelmed, and wishing he could escape.
Then comes the invitation:
Cast your burden on Yahweh.
A burden is something real.
The verse does not tell us to pretend that nothing matters.
It tells us where the weight belongs.
There are things you can care about deeply without being able to control them.
That distinction takes practice.
You may care whether you get the opportunity.
You may care whether the relationship heals.
You may care whether the diagnosis changes.
You may care whether the work succeeds.
You may care whether someone understands you.
Love makes outcomes matter.
Trust keeps them from becoming masters.
Sometimes we imagine surrender means becoming emotionally indifferent.
It does not.
Jesus Himself prayed in Gethsemane with anguish.
Biblical surrender can tremble.
It can grieve.
It can ask strongly for one outcome.
Then place itself in the Father’s hands.
The freedom comes not from ceasing to care, but from ceasing to believe that the outcome determines whether God remains trustworthy.
That is a deeper release.
Maybe the afternoon still holds an answer.
Maybe it does not.
Perhaps nothing will resolve today.
Then let Friday remain unresolved.
You are allowed to continue living while a question stays open.
Eat.
Work.
Laugh if something is funny.
Notice the weather.
Speak kindly to the person in front of you.
Uncertainty does not deserve the whole room.
Give it the portion that belongs to it.
Then cast the rest.
Not once for all time.
You may have to do it again in twenty minutes.
That is still surrender.
We often want spiritual practices to work permanently after one sincere attempt.
But open hands may need reopening.
That does not make the prayer false.
It makes you human.
So notice what you are gripping.
Name it.
Place it before God.
Then return to the life that is still happening around you.
INSIGHT
Surrender does not require indifference.
We can care deeply about an outcome while refusing to make it the foundation of our peace.
Trust gives the burden to God without denying that the burden is heavy.
REFLECTION
What outcome has occupied the largest amount of mental space today?
Have you already done what responsible action requires?
What would it look like to let the matter remain unresolved without letting it consume the rest of your day?
PRAYER
Father, You know what I want and why it matters to me. I place the outcome in Your hands without pretending I do not care. Sustain me where uncertainty is heavy, and keep me present to the life You are still giving while I wait. Amen.
BENEDICTION
You may care without carrying everything.
Open your hands again.
Let the unanswered question remain unanswered for now.
God does not require resolution in order to sustain you.
