DAWN WATCH 009 - ONE LAMP’S WORTH

You were never asked to carry the whole road.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Psalm 119:105

THE TROUBLE WITH WANTING A MAP

We often ask God for a map while He offers us a lamp.

A map would show the whole distance—the turns, the crossings, the places where the ground rises and where it falls away. We could study it from the porch and decide whether the journey looked safe enough to begin.

A lamp offers no such comfort.

It gives enough light for the ground beneath your feet and perhaps the next few steps beyond it. The horizon remains dark. The destination stays hidden.

Yet a lamp does something a map cannot.

It requires you to walk with the One carrying the light.

God’s guidance is often given in measures small enough to preserve relationship. If He showed us the entire road, we might study His direction and then travel without Him. Instead, He gives what is needed for faithful movement while keeping us near.

THE NEXT FAITHFUL STEP

You may not know how the work will end, where provision will come from, which opportunity will open, or what the next season will require.

You may still know what faithfulness looks like this morning.

Make the call.

Tell the truth.

Finish the work already in your hands.

Apologize without defending yourself.

Rest when God has made it plain that your striving has become fear wearing work clothes.

Do not despise a small piece of light because it does not reach the horizon. A lamp was never meant to reveal the whole country. It was meant to keep your next step from landing in the ditch.

Name the one thing you already know to do.

Do that before demanding another mile of instruction.

PRAYER

Father, I confess that I often want certainty more than I want companionship with You.

Quiet my demand to see the entire road. Give me enough light to recognize the next faithful step and enough trust to take it.

Keep me near Your voice as I walk.

Amen.

BENEDICTION

May the darkness beyond your lamp cease to frighten you.

May the light beneath your feet prove sufficient.

And may each faithful step draw you nearer to the One who knows the road.
