EVENING EMBERS 007 - THE FIRE AT THE EDGE OF CAMP

Saturday, August 1, 2026

Ending the first week of the pilgrimage by remembering the God who walked every mile.

“Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.”

1 Samuel 7:12

THE EMBER

Every pilgrim reaches a place where it’s time to stop walking for the day.

The pack comes off.

The boots are set beside the fire.

The road disappears into the darkness, and for a little while there is nothing left to accomplish.

Only to remember.

Samuel gathered a stone and named it Ebenezer—“stone of help”—because he knew people forget. We remember the disappointments with remarkable clarity, but the quiet mercies often fade first. We remember the doors that remained closed while overlooking the ones God kept us from opening. We remember our own weakness while forgetting how many times His strength quietly met us before we knew we needed it.

This week began with an invitation to become a pilgrim.

You looked honestly at the road behind you.

You laid down the map and chose the lamp instead.

You surrendered burdens that never belonged in your hands.

You learned that silence is not abandonment.

You recognized today’s bread.

You stopped long enough to remove the stone that had begun to wound your walk.

None of those evenings were dramatic.

Most of God’s work isn’t.

He changes a life the same way a trail wears across a mountain—not by one enormous step, but by thousands of faithful ones.

The world celebrates breakthroughs.

The Kingdom often celebrates perseverance.

Perhaps you don’t feel different tonight.

Perhaps you expected more.

Don’t measure God’s work only by what you feel.

Measure it by your growing willingness to trust Him.

One surrendered evening.

One honest confession.

One burden released.

One act of quiet obedience.

One more step taken with Christ.

That is how pilgrims are formed.

Before you leave this first camp and begin another week, gather your own Ebenezer.

Name one prayer God answered.

One temptation He helped you resist.

One kindness you received.

One fear He carried.

One place where His faithfulness became visible.

Write it down.

Tell someone.

Remember it.

Because there will come another difficult mile when your heart will ask whether God has ever truly been faithful.

When that day comes, don’t argue with your fear.

Point to the stone.

RELEASE

Release the pressure to become someone else overnight.

Release the disappointment that you are still unfinished.

Release this week into the faithful hands of the One who walked every mile beside you.

The God who brought you this far has not grown weary.

Neither should your hope.

EVENING PRAYER

Father, thank You for walking with me through this first week of the pilgrimage. Thank You for the mercies I noticed and the countless ones I never saw. Thank You for correcting me without abandoning me, providing for me without shaming me, and remaining faithful even when my own heart wavered.

Help me become a person who remembers.

Let gratitude become stronger than anxiety and remembrance stronger than fear.

As I enter another week, let me walk with greater humility, greater trust, and greater love for You than I possessed when this journey began.

I raise my Ebenezer tonight.

Hitherto You have helped me.

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

BENEDICTION

May the fire of remembrance warm your heart through every cold mile ahead.

May the God who has carried you thus far continue to guide your steps, strengthen your hands, and keep your eyes fixed upon Christ until the pilgrimage gives way to home.
