MIDDAY BEARINGS 012 - THE ROAD YOU ARE ON
Peace often returns when you stop traveling the roads you did not take.
Thursday, August 6, 2026 · The Pilgrimage, Day 12
“Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.”
Proverbs 4:27
THE COUNTRY BESIDE THE PATH
A narrowing road makes the country beside it more noticeable.
You begin seeing everything the path excludes.
The opportunity someone else received.
The life that might have followed another decision.
The easier schedule.
The wider margin.
The version of yourself you imagine would have emerged if the road had turned differently.
By midday, comparison can carry you off the path without moving your feet. Your hands continue the assigned work while your heart wanders through another person’s country.
Soon, the road God has given you feels like punishment simply because it is not every road at once.
But a path becomes a path through exclusion.
To travel anywhere, you must leave other directions untaken.
WITHDRAW FROM THE IMAGINED LIFE
Notice where your attention has gone.
Are you grieving something real, or repeatedly inhabiting a life that never belonged to you?
Real grief deserves tenderness. A closed door may represent genuine loss. Faith does not require pretending that every narrowing feels good.
But comparison does not honor grief. It keeps building rooms inside a house you cannot enter.
Return to the road beneath you.
Name one grace that exists here—not in the imagined life, not after circumstances improve, but here.
Name one responsibility that still belongs to you.
Name one person or place deserving your full presence this afternoon.
The road may remain narrow. Yet you can walk it without continually measuring it against the country beyond the gate.
Peace does not always come from receiving more choices.
Sometimes it arrives when you stop trying to live all of them.
PRAYER
Father, call my attention back from roads You have not given me.
Meet me in every genuine loss, and keep grief from becoming a doorway into comparison. Show me the grace, responsibility, and companionship present on this path.
Teach me to walk the road I am actually on.
Amen.
CONTINUE
Release the life assembled from imagined turns.
Return your attention to the path beneath you.
There is grace enough here for the next mile.
