MIDDAY BEARINGS 067: SLOW THE REPLY
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2026 • PILGRIMAGE DAY 067
SCRIPTURE
“So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”
James 1:19
DEVOTIONAL
Anger prefers immediate language.
It tells us that speed is honesty and restraint is compromise. Yet a fast reply can say more than truth requires and wound more than correction demands.
If heat has entered a conversation, slow the reply. Take a breath. Ask one clarifying question. Wait before sending the message. You can speak plainly without allowing anger to choose the vocabulary.
A delayed response can still be courageous.
INSIGHT
Slowness gives truth time to separate itself from the anger that wants to carry it.
REFLECTION
Where is anger pressing you to answer immediately?
What could become clearer if you waited before replying?
PRAYER
God, govern the space between what I feel and what I say. Keep anger from borrowing the voice of truth, and make my response both honest and merciful. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Slow the reply.
Truth will not weaken while you wait.
