MIDDAY BEARINGS 088: LOWER THE HEAT
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2026 • PILGRIMAGE DAY 088
SCRIPTURE
“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”
Proverbs 15:1 (KJV)
DEVOTIONAL
You can feel the conversation changing temperature.
The sentences shorten. Old grievances enter a new disagreement. Someone begins answering what they fear rather than what was said. In that moment, another sharp phrase may feel deserved and still make understanding harder.
Lower what is yours to lower. Speak more slowly. Name the actual issue. Ask whether a pause would help. If a limit is needed, state it without adding an insult to make it feel stronger.
A gentle answer is not a demand to remain in a harmful exchange. You may step away and seek appropriate support. Wherever a truthful conversation is possible, let your manner help make it possible rather than treating escalation as proof of conviction.
INSIGHT
We can reduce our contribution to conflict while still naming the issue and keeping necessary boundaries.
REFLECTION
What is the actual issue beneath the rising heat?
What can you change in your own next sentence?
PRAYER
Father, steady me where tempers rise. Give me clear words, wise limits, and the humility to stop adding heat to what already needs care. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Lower what is yours to lower.
Let clarity remain when the heat recedes.
