MIDDAY BEARINGS 090: RETURN TO THE PRESENT HOUR

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2026 • PILGRIMAGE DAY 090

SCRIPTURE

“Be still, and know that I am God:”

Psalm 46:10 (KJV, excerpt)

DEVOTIONAL

A free day can become crowded with the work of living several days at once.

The hands attend to one task while the mind rehearses next week. A conversation is interrupted by a problem that is not in the room. We can pass through an afternoon without fully arriving in any part of it.

Pause and name what is actually here. A person needs your attention. A meal is before you. One ordinary task can be done with care. Your future responsibilities remain real, but they do not all belong inside this moment.

Remembering that God is God frees you from trying to keep every possible tomorrow active in your mind. Return to the present hour and offer it your attention. There is a kind of faithfulness that looks like being where you are.

INSIGHT

Attention to the present can be an act of trust about the future.

REFLECTION

Where is your mind living instead of in this hour?

What person or ordinary gift deserves your attention now?

PRAYER

Father, bring me back to the hour You have given. Help me attend with love to what is here and entrust the future to Your care. Amen.

BENEDICTION

Return to the hour before you.

Let presence become a quiet gift.
