MIDDAY BEARINGS 011 - HALFWAY TO THE BRIM

Do not abandon ordinary obedience because transformation is not yet visible.

Wednesday, August 5, 2026 · The Pilgrimage, Day 11

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

Galatians 6:9

WHEN THE WATER IS STILL WATER

The hardest point in ordinary obedience may be halfway through.

You have carried enough water to feel the weight, but not enough to fill the jar. The work has become familiar. The first willingness has worn thin. Nothing yet appears transformed.

The water is still water.

The prayer has not been answered in the way you expected. The habit has not produced visible fruit. The conversation remains unresolved. The quiet work beneath your hands seems no closer to becoming what you hoped it might become.

Weariness begins interpreting the silence.

Perhaps this does not matter.

Perhaps you misunderstood.

Perhaps stopping now would make no difference.

But the middle of obedience is a poor place from which to judge its meaning. You can see the weight already carried and the distance still remaining, but you cannot yet see what Christ intends to do with the completed offering.

CARRY THE NEXT BUCKET

Pause before quitting what was plainly entrusted to you.

Not every unfinished task must be completed. Some work should be released. Some directions require correction. Persistence is not faithfulness when pride is the only reason you continue.

But do not mistake fatigue for guidance.

Ask whether the instruction has changed—or whether the work has simply become heavy.

If Christ has redirected you, follow.

If He has not, carry the next bucket.

You are not responsible for producing the transformation. You are responsible for the obedience that remains possible.

Make the next attempt.

Offer the next prayer.

Write the next paragraph.

Keep the next promise.

Fill the portion of the jar within your reach.

The miracle belongs to Christ. The water in your hands is enough responsibility for one afternoon.

PRAYER

Jesus, meet me in the middle of work that has not yet revealed its purpose.

Give me wisdom to recognize redirection and endurance where the instruction remains unchanged. Keep weariness from speaking with an authority You have not given it.

Strengthen my hands for the next ordinary obedience.

Amen.

CONTINUE

Do not demand wine from the bucket.

Carry the water entrusted to you.

The jar is filled one faithful journey at a time.
