MIDDAY BEARINGS 075: THE NEXT SMALL THING
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2026 • PILGRIMAGE DAY 075
SCRIPTURE
“Indeed, who despises the day of small things?”
Zechariah 4:10
DEVOTIONAL
Large hopes are carried by ordinary actions.
By midday, vision can become less useful than the next small thing: sending the message, washing the dish, writing the paragraph, keeping the appointment, or returning to the practice you meant to abandon.
Small does not mean meaningless. It means close enough to do. Ask which action belongs to the hope you have been praying over, then give it your full attention.
A faithful life is often built at a scale the ego finds unimpressive.
INSIGHT
The next small action gives a worthy hope somewhere concrete to live.
REFLECTION
What hope has remained too abstract?
What small action would give that hope a place in this hour?
PRAYER
Father, bring my attention back to the next small thing. Keep me from mistaking spectacle for faithfulness, and steady my hands in ordinary obedience. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Do the next small thing.
Faithfulness does not need a stage.
