MIDDAY BEARINGS 083: WELCOME WITHOUT KEEPING SCORE
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2026 • PILGRIMAGE DAY 083
SCRIPTURE
“Use hospitality one to another without grudging.”
1 Peter 4:9 (KJV)
DEVOTIONAL
An open door can still conceal a closed account book.
We notice who returns the invitation, who thanks us properly, and who seems to take more than they give. Resentment may reveal a real limit, but it may also reveal that our gift carried a condition we never named.
Pause and examine the welcome you are offering. If you cannot give freely, choose a smaller, honest offer instead of a larger promise that becomes a debt. State a necessary limit with kindness.
Then let the gift be a gift. Attend to the person rather than measuring the response. Hospitality without grudging invites us to practice generosity with both a willing heart and truthful capacity.
INSIGHT
A smaller gift freely offered can welcome more deeply than a larger one burdened with silent demands.
REFLECTION
What expectation have you attached to an act of welcome?
Would a clearer limit help you give more willingly?
PRAYER
Father, search the conditions hidden in my generosity. Help me offer what I can give freely, speak limits kindly, and receive others without keeping a private score. Amen.
BENEDICTION
Let the gift be freely given.
Truthful limits can make room for willing love.
