MIDDAY BEARINGS 086: THE PAUSE BEFORE THE ANSWER

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2026 • PILGRIMAGE DAY 086

SCRIPTURE

“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:”

James 1:19 (KJV, excerpt)

DEVOTIONAL

Sometimes the most important part of an answer is the moment before it.

A sharp remark can invite a sharper one. An accusation can make us want to speak quickly enough to regain control. James places hearing, speech, and anger together because our pace affects what we are able to notice.

Take the pause available to you. Clarify what was meant. Separate the actual concern from the tone in which it arrived. If the conversation needs time, say so plainly and arrange a time to return.

Slowness is not evasion when it helps you answer truthfully. You can remain firm without making anger the author of your words. Let the next sentence serve understanding rather than the immediate relief of striking back.

INSIGHT

A deliberate pause can protect both truth and the person who needs to hear it.

REFLECTION

What answer are you tempted to give too quickly?

What needs clarification before you respond?

PRAYER

Lord, guard the space between my reaction and my response. Help me speak clearly, listen carefully, and refuse the needless harm of hurried anger. Amen.

BENEDICTION

Take the pause you need.

Let your words arrive with care.
