MIDDAY BEARINGS 095: HELP WITHOUT TAKING OVER

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2026 • PILGRIMAGE DAY 095

SCRIPTURE

“But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”

Hebrews 13:16 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL

An offer of help can quietly become a plan for someone else’s life.

We see a need and imagine the solution so quickly that we stop asking what the person wants or what they have already tried. Good intentions do not remove the need for careful listening.

Before taking over, ask what help would be useful. Make an offer clear enough to accept or decline. If you can provide only part of what is needed, say so plainly. Sharing does not require you to become the center of another person’s situation.

The goodness Hebrews commends is not made less valuable by humility. Sometimes the fitting gift is a small practical service carried out on someone else’s terms. Let care remain generous enough to respect a response different from the one you expected.

INSIGHT

Helpful generosity offers support without taking ownership of another person’s choices.

REFLECTION

Have you asked what kind of help would be welcome?

Can your offer be declined without pressure or disappointment being imposed?

PRAYER

Lord, keep my help humble. Teach me to listen, offer clearly, respect another person’s response, and serve without needing to take over. Amen.

BENEDICTION

Offer care with an open hand.

Leave room for the other person’s voice.
